This is a nice little surprise close to the airport (welcome to the south side of town!) - Skip's. Their menu is fairly diverse, but everyone told me to get their steak, so who am I to go rouge on friendly advice? Filet Mignon it was - and boy was it tasty! Grilled perfectly to order and coupled with a delicious side of spinach and Cabernet. The service was excellent, prices reasonable (think date night), bar was friendly and dimly lit. I loved Skips and I will definitely be back.

We were from out of town and wanted a place to eat before catching a flight out. Something that was beyond the chain restaurants. I did a search on Yelp, and followed the other reviews, we weren't disappointed at all. We were in a time constraint but were served quick and efficient. I had the Shrimp Club, nice change for lunch!

Hit up Skip's last night for the first time and I really dug it! It was getting packed around 5:30 when we decided to try it out before hitting a movie and Fleur Cinema! We found a couple seats at the bar and decided to plant ourselves there for the next hour before our movie! We enjoyed, Bob behind the bar! He was fun, super hard working, and a talented bartender, and gave us the tip, on getting a half order of Onion Rings instead of the full one! It was the perfect amount, and then he said, "I can always get you more if you need it." with a wink! I had 3 bottle of Point Lager, which I had never had before! It was great! Ashley had a couple martini's, I tried a sip of both and usually I'm not a martini fan both they were both really good. It was such a pleasure watching a great bartender work, and I dug the dark atmosphere of the restaurant! Service was awesome, and there was a line outside the door for good reason! Menu is a bit on the pricey side, but you get what you pay for and this house turned into restaurant has got the goods! We will be back for sure!

My go-to restaurant for when I stay out by the airport for work closed. As I pulled up to the door and saw its signage was long gone I was at first deeply disappointed. However, this clearly demonstrated that when the universe closes one door it opens another. In this case, it was a door that lead to a much better restaurant that now has earned the title of my new #1 on Fleur Drive. That is how I happened upon Skip's. The place has a real old-school restaurant vibe, complete with dark wood paneling. It's the kind of place that makes you want to order an Old Fashioned. My server was a seasoned professional, clearly having worked in the industry (and possibly that restaurant) for a long time. She was friendly, efficient and handled the lunch rush with ease. I ordered the Seafood Chicken. Served open faced, it is chicken upon toasted sourdough bread with imitation crab meat, shrimp and hollandaise. The chicken/seafood combo is one that I would have questioned. However, pictures of it on yelp were enticing enough for me to give it a go. I'm glad I did. It was really enjoyable which I guess shouldn't have been such a surprise. I mean, how can you go wrong with a dish covered in hollandaise, am I right?! As I left Skip's fat and happy, my former dining fav was but a distant memory.

What a great find! Stopped in for a late bite with some co-workers and we were greeted by friendly staff and some of the most delicious nachos ever. Not only are they cheesy and delicious, but have a layer of aioli that makes them oh so delicious. Decent beer selection and other tasty bites. Would definitely return.

Stopped in for a light lunch while waiting for delayed outbound flight. Ordered the open faced steak sandwich. It was anything but light. Is it really a complaint when there's too much food? Presentation and smell was fabulous upon delivery, and the medium rare was spot on.

Hidden gem in DSM. Went here because of Yelp! And will come again. Sat at the bar with Bob...nice and not overly chatty. Chicken Picatta was generous portion, although a tad salty. Au gratin spuds very good. Nice beer selection. A LOT of locals, which speaks volumes...

Traveled across the US from Andrews AFB to Beale AFB and we stopped to stay the night in Des Moines IA. This was the spot we were told was the best and it was the best. Steak was to die for and the location was really cool it was in a old house. Try it you will enjoy it.

Nothing special about the food here. Like most restaurants in Des Moines and surrounding area, the reviews over rate and the food under rates. Ambiance of this place is nice.

Usually I don't write reviews as I am always on the road - using yelp to find the best place in town. This restaurant was not the most reviewed (likely because it is not downtown) but absolutely deserves 5 stars! The service was literally perfect; faster than I thought possible. Sirloin with Potatoes - just amazing. Great flavor - perfectly cooked, amazing. This is my new place in Des Moines!!!

Recently had the chance to come with a friend from Jacksonville Florida and his family friends from Des Moines. The host family mentioned that Skips was co owned by a classmate and spouse and they were fair priced with elegant dining in a family classical setting. The house transformed to an "eastcoast" Hampton style eatery was beautiful, the staff exceptional, and the food outstanding! A definite Des Moines "must" ! Had the noodle soup, the shrimp pasta and spinach artichoke dip, wow great portions, decently priced and open late during week!

I went here a few months back on a date - and well I enjoy'd it quite a lot. The place is small but clean and the help is friendly. He got the steak sandwich - which looked amazing for the price and I got the bowtie creole. A bit spicy - but over all that's what you'd expect. My only comment would be that the chicken was a bit dry - but the rest of the pasta more than made up for it!

I have lived here for a few years and finally tried this restaurant. I was skeptical as I worried it was one of many other area restaurants that had stood out years ago, but quality faded in recent years. I have been here a couple times for lunch and both times I was not disappointed. You have to get there early because when we left, there were people waiting to get seated and this was on a Tuesday! My recommendation: The Chicken Deburgo Each time I go, I plan to try something different as they have an extensive menu and so far I have not been disappointed.

This is the Does Moines classic. Well priced steaks and great appetizers. I have the recommend their onion rings barbecue chicken nachos and ribeye. Finish off with one of the best key lime pies I've ever had. This is Des Moines' version of Outback but much better.

  • Jim D.

A Very nice place and loved the onion rings plus the pork tenderloin was the bomb. Great beer selection too with Millstream Stout on tap to name a few. Highly recommend this place and the service was great too. We even over stayed and they made us feel very welcome.

sadly underwhelmed. perhaps we should have ordered the highly recommended items and not lemon shrimp pasta & marinara pasta. Bar area is nice and dim and slightly divey so one could just come for the drinks.

You know a local restaurant is good when there is a line on a Tuesday night! Traveling through Des Moines, Iowa on business and eating alone, the staff at the Hampton Inn recommended Skip's. And it was a good recommendation. I was looking for a place where I could sit, read my book, and enjoy a glass of wine and a good dinner. Skip's made the grade. A short wait for a table, the waitress took my drink order. One flaw during the evening, the service. The waitress never showed me a wine list, never told me about the soups of the day, and disappeared for 15 minutes at the end of my meal. Regardless, she did seem to have parties all over the restaurant (which of course makes it hard for any customer to get consistent service). I ordered a glass of a Kendall-Jackson Cabernet which was fine, but not excessive. My entree came with a salad which was crisp, fresh and diverse (tomato, red onion sliced thinly, cucumbers, green peppers, varied lettuces) with real blue cheese dressing (not too wet). For my entree I wanted a mid-western meat! So I ordered the pork shank. It was fall off the bone tender and very, very delicious. One drawback- it would have been even better if it was served hotter. Maybe the waitress was so busy with other tables she forgot to get my order? Regardless, I was so tempted to pick up the huge bone shank and chew off the remaining meat I misses with my fork! Decorum convinced me to not perform that ritual! :) All in all a fine meal, at a friendly and popular restaurant. I'd like to give it 3.5 stars, but Yelp doesn't let me. It's worth another visit!

I like consistent quality food and service when dining out. Skip's is always fresh and every bite memorable. My personal favorite is their Santa Fe salad - big, with chunks of chicken, black beans, lettuce, and topped with thin tortilla strips. Usually crowded at lunch, but definitely worth the wait. I plan to continue visiting often. Skip's is definitely a fantastic local spot!

Whenever I am forced to fly into Des Moines, yes I said forced, I go here for my first meal. Don't get me wrong I love your great state, it's just that I normally have to fly through crappy weather to get to your wonderful state. Skip's makes everything better for me and is worth putting up with the weather. I love the pork shank with the mushroom demi, it's Iowa so pork is the obvious choice. My guilty pleasure is the spinach/artichoke dip and the rarebit, but if I usually have to loosen my belt one notch if I eat those in combo.

First time here. Service was good. Got the recommended chicken nachos. Good flavor but they were slightly burnt on top. Also had the walleye. Fairly disappointing. Not the freshest piece of fish to begin with, and bottom breading was soggy with butter. Garlic mashed potatos were fine. All in all thought it was pricey for what you get. Hopefully it was just an off night, but I doubt I'll be back.

I went there for my first time ladt Saturday and i can't wait to go back. The atmosphere was great, food was good, margarita was tasty and strong, and a very polite staff. The only thing our server used very unsanitary server skills while bringing multiple plates to a table.

This is a somewhat hidden gem in Des Moines. From the service to the drinks and food everything was exquisite. This will be our new go to for a great local place to treat out of town guests at. I'm already looking forward to our next visit.

This white house with the sign Skips in front may not seem like much when you are driving by, but definitely stop and have a meal here because it is really something! This restaurant would be placed into the romantic dining category if I had to choose a category for this eatery. Upon entering you know it is an intimate place based on the limited seating and very dimly lit dining area. The staff members were all very friendly from the time we entered to the time we finished eating, our server was engaging and fun! The atmosphere was pretty relaxing, the majority of the customers were either couples or small groups of 3-4 people, very easy going place. For our dinner we had Mussels for starters, we also had the Pork Shank and Bowtie Creole. We were both also given salad and bread with butter with our meal. The salad was good, but the bread with butter was phenomenal; it was warm, smooth, and very tasty. The mussels not only tasted great, but there was a good amount for an appetizer! There was a little error with the servers, apparently they gave our order to a party that came after us by mistake; they apologized for the mix-up before we even noticed what had occurred. Accidents happen! The Pork Shank was good, but certainly not the best I've had, they could have done better with the texture, it wasn't tender all-around. The fries I had for the side dish was okay as well, I probably will not be getting the fries as a side again. Now the Bowtie Creole, this is something out of this world! It tasted amazing, everything about it was great! It was so good I would be pretty confident if I stated it is one of the best pasta dishes I have had in my life! Yes, it is that good! Do I recommend this place? Absolutely, but one thing I would recommend you do when you come here is GET THE BOWTIE CREOLE and then have your taste buds enter a whole new world!

Its an easy five step process: 1. Go to Skip's 2. Sit at the bar and order whatever libation you desire 3. Ignore all food recommendations 'Bob the bartender' offers you 4. Order the chicken nachos, sit back and try to compare that deliciousness to any other nacho you've ever had at any time 5. Apologize to Bob for ignoring him, but explain that you've just had a religious experience with the best nachos you've ever had.

Excellent home cooked food. The homemade sauce on the Bowtie Creole was superb!!! Definitely will stop here and eat again when I am in Des Moines. Jody our server was very pleasant and informative about the dining options and her recommendations

Great old-fashioned restaurant. I really enjoyed my experience here. the service was just right and the steaks were spot on! I ordered the Steak De Burgo med rare and it was exactly how I wanted it. The sauce and mushrooms were a nice compliment. I'm sure it may not be a healthy choice, but that wasn't what I was looking for. I also had the house salad with a parm garlic dressing...pretty tasty dressing...and a side of the garlic mashed potatoes...yum. The only disappointment I had was on my beverage order...I ordered a Guinness...it came in a can and not out of the tap. I will definitely be coming back to Skip's on my next business trip through Des Moines. I think for where you are this is a 5 star steak house, but if it were to be any where near Chicago it would be a 3 star...thus I arrived at my 4 star rating. Well done, Skippy!

Little disappointed based on the number of stars this restaurant has and the quality I received. It's in a old white house, which provides for a nice atmosphere but I was not impressed. Based off the menu there was a lot of seafood, given I was in Iowa I did not go for the seafood, as I like mine fresh. I noticed the 'Seafood Chicken' which had imitation crab meat, it says that on the menu! Steak selection was small, but I noticed they had a Pork Shank. Most entrees come with a house salad and a side dish. Salad was basic, I got Italian dressing which seams out of a bottle and very salty. Sides where basic, I chose the fresh vegetables and they were steamed, not alot of real flavor. The Pork Shank looked very impressive and for $19 looked well worth it, but it stopped there. The pork was dry with a tough crispy skin as if they did not cook the pork long enough or properly, needs to be low and slow. The portion was large and the rice pilaf was basic. There was a mushroom reduction sauce on top, but not a lot of flavor. Overall the food was ok.

Perfect service, stiff drinks and over the top entrees!!! Try it for yourself. I will be frequenting this establishment regularly now. We ordered four meals for our table. They all came out at the same time, perfectly cooked and hot! We had filets and a fixture of pasta. The salads were prepared perfectly. Everything was cut perfectly and the dressing was spot on. I definitely don't review places this well, but this place deserves it. 18 months in IA and finally found a place like I am use to finding back in Phoenix.

Old fashioned and incredibly good. Best steak sandwich in town. Pasta carbonara is really good but i usually get the steak, perfectly cooked to order each time. If you get the sandwich its topped w thin onion rings. Great service too.

We first stumbled upon this place because we pass it every Sunday heading to church. I liked the look of the exterior and had to find out what type of place 'Skip's' was. I was happy to find good reviews on Yelp for it. We went on a Friday night (around 7:00 pm) and the place was busy. There were many people waiting outside for a table. We were told a 30 min wait for two but then the host (who was the nicest host I think I have ever encountered) saw an open table in the bar area and asked if we wanted to sit there. Already, this place was off to a good start. A 30 min wait down to less than a min! The place is a bit on the dark side but has the appropriate lighting to not really be dark at your table. There is a rich wood interior which I loved. We did feel like we were young compared to the rest of the crowd although, towards the end of our meal, some younger people started trickling in. This place has really really nice staff. I actually think they are maybe the nicest staff of any restaurant I have been to. Our waiter was great and right on time with everything! As I mentioned before, the host was soo nice and even the other staff when I asked where the bathroom was, was more than willing to help! Ok, now what you came to really read about, the food! Based on everyone's recommendations, we got the Smoked Chicken Nachos to start. We had the smaller portion but for 2 people, it was still rather large. They were good but we were disappointed with the amount of chicken on them (it seemed hard to find the chicken). I hate to say it but Jethro's nachos beat these out. Next came our salads and bread. The salads had good size to them and I really enjoyed their house Honey Mustard Salad Dressing. It was very flavorful and not heavy. The bread was delicious! Warm and soft! For our main entree's we had the Jalapeno Cream Pasta and Bowtie Creole Cream Pasta. Both were delicious! They had great flavor and just in case you are wondering, the Jalapeno one was hotter than the Bowtie Cream one. These came with garlic bread which were ok to me (a bit salty) but my husband liked it a lot. Skip's is a place I would come back to again. Not only for the food but also the hospitality!

we're from out of town and went to Skip's on recommendation of hotel. It was Friday nite, and really busy at most any restaurant. Two of us got in very quickly, service was great! Waiters were professional and moved very quickly to serve. Our waitress (sorry I don't remember her name) was the best! We'd come back anytime...in fact on our third nite stay, we think we're going back again tonight! Ya gotta go there! RD.

I really wanted to like it. Friendly host. Neat bar. Only reason for two stars. I ordered the special. I was told a chicken breast marinated in balsamic vinaigrette over veggies. Sounds fresh and healthy right? What I got was a breaded and fried chicken breast where the only taste was grease. It was over carrots. I don't even like carrots. BF got a salad and wasn't impressed. He thought the service wasn't very good. I thought it was fine although funny she didn't ask how the food was. $10 for most things on the extensive lunch menu...everything sounded good but I won't be back to try it again.

The ambiance is quite interesting. It is very dark and you are setting fairly close to the other diners in what appears to be an old house. The food is exceptional. We went on valentines day and had the special which was steak Oscar topped with dungeness crab. The cut of meat was quality, cooked to our order, with a very good sauce. Would recommend to anyone who can appreciate a good steak.

Really disappointing. Skip's used to be one of my favorite restaurants but my recent experience was really disappointing. It was a busy night but the bartender was quick and attentive, and the drinks were good. After we sat down the service lagged but it was busy so we were patient. For dinner I ordered the seared ahi tuna based on the waitress's suggestion. In hindsight, I think they were just trying to get rid of the last of the tuna from the weekend before. I love seared ahi but the seared ahi at Skip's was really disappointing. It wasn't bad but it just didn't taste good. I was starving and for $18 I was expecting a great meal. Instead I got a piece of fish which tasted like it had been thawed and re-frozen. I mentioned this to the waitress who said she would let the kitchen know. Whether she did or not, I don't know. She never said another word about it. Nope, nothing. Then to top off my dining experience the waitress 'accidentally' charged me, and my friend both, for the side salad which came with our entrees. We pointed this out and she removed the charge. We left and decided not to have dinner at Skip's again.

I went to Skip's at the recommendation of my friends. It was worth every penny. Their much heralded nachos live up to every ounce of the hype. Should you be someone so inclined to partake in nachos, you should absolutely not hesitate for a moment in ordering them! I had my doubts, being a dubious foodie and was proved wrong instantly. Other dishes we sampled on this evening were the mussels appetizer (which I recommend highly also!) and the seared tuna which was also delicious. Everything was delicious, well prepared and well presented. We really enjoyed our trip there and I'm fairly certain you will too should you decide to visit Skip's.

Skips Des Moines Iowa With Skips it's just best to get down to it. When we arrived at Skips we found that it was located in an old house which is different from most restaurants these days. The inside was dark yet the lighting at the table was very adequate which made for a nice combination, lots of dark grain wood which makes the place feel warm and comfortable. I will admit that at first the waitress made me nervous when asked what they were known for and she said everything I was quite skeptical and thought she either didn't know or was lying. However in the end she ended up guiding those who asked to very good choices. She was attentive and my water glass never got below a half. When the salads arrived I got the feeling we were in for a good night. All of the dressings but the French we were told were made in house. (who would ever order French) The raspberry vinaigrette was one of the best I've had. They also brought bread to the table which was also extremely good and I am not much of a bread guy. When the food arrived I was extremely happy with the portion sizes but the moment of truth was how did it taste? At our table we had the following: Grilled Top Sirloin served on grilled sourdough and topped with onion rings It was on the menu as a sandwich and served open faced. You could order this as a steak instead of a sandwich and be very happy, great taste and really a good value. Lemon & Garlic Shrimp garlic and shrimp sautéed in a lemon butter with broccoli on linguini Very large portion, loads of shrimp which along with the broccoli were cooked to perfection. Jalapeno Cream a spicy cream sauce on linguini All I can say it hot! Chicken Alfredo breaded chicken tenders tossed in an Alfredo sauce and served with garlic toast on linguini When the words breaded chicken tenders are used it makes me think of fast food. This was far from the case in fact my wife used seldom used pharse (this reminds me of your mom's chicken) and trust me those words are almost never uttered. Walleye pan-fried golden brown This was my dish and in my humble opinion the best at the table. The tilapia looked sexier on the menu being coconut and pecan crusted served with a honey mustard glaze but the waitress without hesitation said go with the Walleye and boy was she right. It was by far the best piece of fish I've had where you could not feel the ocean breezes on your face. Large portion, nice crust and great flavor my daughter who is not real keen on fish tried it and liked it. It was served with a side of steamed broccoli which again was cooked perfectly. Skips has easily earned a spot in my top 5 favorite places to eat anywhere in the state of Iowa. The only problem is I may never try anything else on the menu. In the end the waitress may have very well been right it looks like everything on the menu is great. You have to try this place just don't go the nights I want to so I don't have to wait. Price range: (everyday, a night out, a special occasion only) a night out Overall rankings all based 1 to 5 Atmosphere: 5 Service: 4 Food: 5 Value: 4 Overall 5 4000 Fleur Drive Des Moines, IA 50321 (515) 287-1820 skipsdesmoines.com

I was with a party of 3 other adults and a toddler. We arrived around 4:30pm on a Saturday night. I figured it would be dead at this time, but I was wrong. While there were empty tables when we arrived, an hour later there was already wait list. This place has a nice, midwestern-inspired menu with several salads, sandwiches, pastas and "meat and potatoes"-type dishes. Nothing overly pretentious. Everything was cooked to perfection. Based upon food alone, I'd go back for sure. My only complaint is this: They served the rest of the table without bringing our toddler's meal. In fact, the child had to wait an additional 10-15 minutes before his food was brought out. I realize this isn't a restaurant that caters to small children. However, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to realize that a child's meal should be the FIRST plate that arrives at the table. By the time his grilled cheese arrived, he had already been given portions of everyone else's meal so that he would not be kept waiting, and his meal went totally uneaten. Frankly, this place's menu and ambiance didn't suggest that it was too high end for a child (and they have high chairs, so they expect diners will bring their families).

Ordered the baby back ribs to go. Not the best I've had, not the worst. They were a-ok, and thus, the 3 star rating. the cole slaw and mashed weren't to die. the diner was fairly packed when I walked in. wait staff seemed pretty busy, but the man behind the bar was attentive and took my order right away. restaurant is located nearby the airport - you can't miss it, as it looks like a big two story house from the outside.
